Yadi and Looper talk strategy
It was exciting to arrive at Roger Dean Stadium today and join the sea of red-clad fans, watching the Cards take on the Mets. The stakes were decidely lower than the last time these two teams got together.
We had seats in Section 102, behind the Cards bullpen, which afforded a great view of the players as they entered and exited the field. Check out all my photos in the new Spring Training 2007 photo album in the sidebar. The Cardinals seemed to be in a great mood today and nearly all of them signed autographs – Pujols, Speizio, Carpenter, and Molina signed for quite a while.
Yes, Albert signed for all those kids
Looper had his first start today, and he worked pretty efficiently. Unfortunately, subsequent pitchers let him down, and the Cards blew a 5-1 lead to lose 6-5. Narveson gave up 2 runs, then Kinney quickly loaded the bases and gave up 3 runs in the top of the 9th. Kinney just could not find the plate today, and he also made an errant throw in a pickoff attempt.
Molina talks to Kinney after he’s loaded the bases
There were some definite offensive highlights, with Pujols getting a hit and 2 RBIs and Molina getting an RBI double. J Rod covered a lot of ground to make an awesome catch in deep right-center, but Duncan made us groan when he lost a ball in the sun that appeared catchable, although he wasn’t credited with an error.
I’m looking forward to my 2nd game tomorrow and seeing how Kip Wells will do in his first start, as the Cards take on the Marlins.
ESPN reports that wrestling superstar Kurt Angle got some BP instruction from Pujols today. Angle was invited to Spring Training by David Eckstein, a big wrestling fan who recently managed along with A. J. Pierzynski at a pay-per-view event.
I hadn’t thought much about wrestling since I was in junior high until two weeks ago when I attended Lucha Va Voom in LA. It’s a biannual spectacle involving Mexican wrestling, comedy, and burlesque that plays to sold out crowds. The burlesque routines involved cirque du soleil antics, hula hoops, and pogo sticks. It’s truly an extravaganza beyond Vince McMahon’s wildest dreams.
Back in junior high, I was big wrestling fan. My favorite wrestler was "Rowdy" Roddy Piper and I once called in and read a poem I’d written about him when he appeared on a KMOX chat show hosted by Bob Costas. He was promoting Wrestlemania 2, when he boxed Mr. T. Roddy responded to my breathlessly-read love poem with some lewd remark, and Bob stated very sarcastically that he found the poem deeply moving. I still hold a grudge against Costas.
Spring Training haikus coming soon!
Got my Spring Training tix! I roused myself at 6:00 AM to log on, so I was there right when tix went on sale. Still, I couldn’t get really prime seats. What gives? Do you have to buy one of those travel packages to get good tickets? Anyway, I don’t really mind because there’s not a bad seat in the house at Roger Dean Stadium. This will be my third trip to Jupiter, and I’m really looking forward to it. I first went in 2004 and the experience really took my Cardinal fandom to a new level. Even if the games don’t really count, it’s exciting to be so close to the action. These are the games I’ll be seeing:
March 2 – Mets
March 3 – Marlins
March 5 – Astros
March 6 – Orioles
Hope to see you there!
